If I had to choose an underlying theory that informs my work and life, it would be Gestalt. It’s holistic, grounded in the present moment, respectful of one’s resistances, and supportive of one’s innately creative, adaptable and healthy self. Somatic Psychotherapy is a term I use to describe my use of Gestalt Physical Process. All of our experiences, and therefore the strengths and problems that clients bring to their sessions, are embodied. When this embodied—physical, sensorial, interior – experience is compassionately witnessed and supported, the deepening of one’s awareness and connection to self can be remarkable. Working with the body is working in the temple, and for many clients, it is a beautiful ‘homecoming.’
